notes: Originally released on Binkcrsh Records in 2005, "La Fin Triste" is a melodic, emotionally charged album that covers a wide range of sounds and styles, but fits mostly in the experimental drum n' bass/IDM genres. This is the last record I did under the Cats On Earth alias and I'm still pretty proud of how well it holds up even though I've moved away from this style in recent years. The album tells a story that's not necessarily important to the enjoyment of the music, but it's all about loss, self-reflection and running from your history only to discover yourself in the remnants left behind by your departed family. This release contains all new artwork, has been re-encoded from it's original masters and contains a previously unreleased track, "Constant Failure".
-la fin triste [2005]

label: binkcrsh
catalog#: BK024-CD

tracks:

01 - his father's grave (act one)
02 - cesar
03 - i'm sorry we're no longer friends
04 - counting the rays of the sun

10 - and you will never know
11 - act three
12 - the girl with leopard spots
13 - rue
14 - thac0
15 - the rain will wash it away

notes: although not expressly evident, this is a concept album from start to finish. based on a short story, i structured this album like a 3-act opera and attempted to convey the aura of sitting down in a theatre to watch the piece being performed live by a hybrid mechanical/human orchestra. i always envisioned the story being acted out by marionettes, but i suppose that's just my subjective vision and isn't really hinted at anywhere in the music. this is the first time this album has been released online, having only been available on CD through the german label binkcrsh records. 'la fin triste' is still my pride and joy and may very well be the last album i release as cats on earth, so enjoy and spread the love around!

-arrows on water [2004]

label: mad scientist recordings
catalog #: sci011
release: august 2004

tracks:

01 - two chairs, outside
02 - requiem
03 - nanoscope
04 - from books or from journal
05 - sylibalic
06 - powerlines

notes: the audio experiments of the CoE Sessions record naturally led into most of the tracks found on this EP. almost every sound on this album was pieced together from various field recordings of my everyday life. all that remixing had led me to think about music in a very different way and as such, this album is much less about notes on a keyboard or the familiarity of music created by traditional instruments - instead it focuses primarily on the music we invent in our heads. the rhythm of construction work, the notes of chimes floating on the wind and all that kinda artsy shit. every original track from this period was lost in a hard drive crash and these mp3s are all that could be scavenged from various places around the internets.
-majestic music [2003]

label: mad scientist recordings
catalog #: sci010
release: october 2003

tracks:

01 - california mecca
02 - ruffians
03 - junot's beat
04 - trubble
05 - majestic music
06 - the whole story
07 - stumps
08 - marijuana & records [extra track]

notes: for this web-only EP i decided to go back to my roots a bit and do a more laid-back, hip-hop influenced record. most of my other music was done on pretty much the same kind of set up (desktop PC running ACID, sound forge, etc), but this record was done completely on my ibook using new programs i'd never experimented with before. it kinda shows in a few areas, but all-in-all i think it's a pretty solid release.

05 - public enemy - pe #1 [numero uno]

11 - cats on earth - fucking thing [matt's mum]
12 - ninth key - hands of time [vocal edit]
13 - ganzfeld - chimera [mouth watering]

notes: while i was in ninja tune limbo after completing "pimp hard" and "throw aways" i spent the better part of 2001 doing remixes and bootlegs to pass the time as i secretly began experimenting with sounds that were very different than the sample heavy, hip-hop influenced work i'd done previously. these tracks are some of the most meaningful to me from that period of time. here is where i began working out the sound and technique of my "new direction". a lot of experiments on this record, some that worked better than others. the remixes of "differ", "PE1" and "bucephelus bouncing ball" are still among my favorite tracks.

-mama told me to pimp hard (and i wont let her down) [2000]

label: mad scientist recordings
catalog #: sci006
release: december 2000

tracks:

01 - play the record
02 - twilight
03 - getto jam
04 - trippin'
05 - poplock
06 - 35 cuban fishermen
07 - plum
08 - way of the samurai [cats on earth remix]
09 - slightly polished breeze
10 - sweet tooth [acid shit]
11 - goodbye

notes: this is the first official cats on earth album, released in 2000 via ampcast.com. this release sat on the shelves for the better part of a year before finally being released and the story, though depressing as hell for me, bares mentioning. the long and short of it is that i sent the album to ninja tune and they showed some interest - no contracts signed or anything like that, but they liked both 'pimp hard' and the 'throw aways' disc i'd sent them as a follow up and it seemed like they were close to taking the next step - but due to some layoffs at the label and an over zealous former a&r dude who loved the album so much he decided to take it home with him to use as the first release on his own label (which obviously never got off the ground), the album fell off ninja tune's radar and was lost to everyone but me and the few faithful netizens that purchased it from ampcast.

notes: all the tracks from these sessions were recorded live to cassette tape using only an oberheim matrix 6, a linn drum, a nord lead and a yamaha dx-7 played by me, milton carrillo and a few special guests. good times. miss that set up.

other aliases:

-nova satori - a sun of sound [2008]

tracks:

01 - iridium
02 - sunshade
03 - apsis
04 - statite
05 - periapsis

notes: probably my most dramatically different project. while it certainly doesn't come completely out of left field (the groundwork was all there if you really look for it), this record is a definite departure (hence the alternate alias). this album can't really be considered electronic music (although i produced it in exactly the same way i've produced all of my other work), instead it relies heavily on a more traditional band set up. guitars, bass, piano and drums are at the core of the nova satori sound, which i consider very ethereal, spacey and eclectic. think of it as a small taste of things to come.
